Obituary for Harold G. Sawyer

EDGERTON—Harold G. Sawyer, age 93, of Edgerton, formerly of Oak Lawn, IL, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020, at Swift Haven Assisted Living, Edgerton. He was born in Chicago on May 25, 1926, the son of the late William and Mary (Holloway) Sawyer. Harold served in the US Navy during WWII. After receiving his education from the Commercial Art Institute, he worked 35 years at Union Carbide as a commercial artist. Harold married Shirley L. Schweikert on May 2, 1959 and she preceded him in death on March 30, 2014. As they approached retirement, they moved to the Edgerton, WI area, making their home on Lake Koshkonong. He was very active in the community, volunteering for “peanuts” at the Congregational Church, Meal on Wheels, among other things. He enjoyed living on the lake, gardening, playing cards and spending time with friends, neighbors, and family, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Peter Episcopal Church in Fort Atkinson.

He is survived by his 3 daughters: Kimberly (James) Griffin of Oak Lawn, IL, Sherri Sawyer of Lake Villa, IL, and Bonnie (Shannon) Sawyer of Atlanta, GA; 2 grandchildren, Dillon and Caitlin Griffin; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a sister, Gertrude McKenzie; and 5 brothers: Henry, Walter, William, Norman, and Ralph Sawyer.

A Celebration of Harold’s Life will take place on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the APFEL EHLERT FUNERAL HOME, 315 Lord St. (Hwy 51) Edgerton. There will be a brief sharing of memories at 6:30 p.m. followed by Military honors at the Funeral Home.
An additional gathering will take place at on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020 at the Zimmerman & Sandeman Funeral Homes, 5200 W 95th St, Oak Lawn, IL 60453 Visitation at 10am with a service at 11:15.
