Obituary for Gerald D. Apfel

EDGERTON—Gerald D. Apfel, age 82, of Janesville, died unexpectedly Thursday, Nov. 9, 2017, at MercyHealth Hospital & Trauma Center. He was born in Evansville on Aug. 11, 1935, the son of Lloyd and Corinne (Murwin) Apfel and was a 1953 graduate of Evansville High School. Jerry served in the US Army and was a graduate of the Airborne School at Fort Benning, GA. On Sept. 14, 1965, he married Lois M. “Babe” Demrow at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Janesville. Jerry was employed for 44 years at General Motors until his retirement in 2000 and was a member of the UAW Local 95. He loved deer hunting, something he and eventually his sons looked forward to doing every November. In nearly 60 years, he only missed one opening weekend, because his “favorite” son, Kevin was born that year. He also enjoyed sitting on the front porch watching the cars drive by, golfing, playing cribbage, and doing every crossword imaginable as well as Sodoku and Cryptaquotes. Even though he was rather quiet, both he and Ma were always proud to tout about their family, especially the grandkids.

He is survived by his wife, Babe; 3 sons: Dale (Bonnie) Apfel of Edgerton, Joel (Michelle) Apfel of Janesville, and Kevin (Jenifer) Apfel of Edgerton; 3 loving grandkids: Kendall, Sasha, and Elena Apfel; 2 sisters: Doris (Arthur) Olsen of Evansville, and Nadene (Tom) Dreher of Janesville; a sister-in-law, Joyce (Pete) Cleven of Fitchburg; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Albert and Robert Apfel; and by a sister, Darlene Apfel.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, at ST. JOHN EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 207 E. High St. Edgerton. Rev. Carl Seeger will officiate and burial will be in Bethel Cemetery, Center Township. Visitation will take place on Sunday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the APFEL EHLERT FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICE, 315 Lord St. Edgerton, and again on Monday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service.
